Spires history
Spires was formed in August 1994 by Bobby Tsui and Bryan Townsend with the goal of bringing a variety of undergraduate works from national universities together in one publication. Spires was originally built as a chapter-based structure. Washington University was the school that published the magazine, but its chapter of Spires was only one of five chapters that contributed student work. The other four participating universities were Columbia, DePaw, Tulane, and Yeshiva.
In recent years, though, the Wash U "chapter" of Spires has been operating largely on its own to produce the magazine. It is still very much an intercollegiate operation, and lately we've been looking at more work than ever from non-Wash U students. Recent work has come from schools like Bennington, Brown, Georgia College and State University, and Yale.
